Shade & Snow is built to be private. There are no accounts, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking, and the app never connects to a server. Everything stays on your device.

Information we collect

None. Shade & Snow has no user accounts and no servers of our own. Your walk log (which chapters you walked, when, how each one ended and when you turned back), the sayings you carried home and your settings are stored on your device, in Apple’s on-device database and the app’s preferences. They are not synced to iCloud and are never sent to us or anyone else; like any app’s data, they are included in your own device backup if you make one. Deleting the app deletes them.

Head tracking and motion

With your permission (Motion & Fitness), the app reads your head’s movement from AirPods that support head tracking; without them it uses the motion sensors in your iPhone or iPad, so the sounds stay in place in the room as you turn. With the same permission it uses your device’s activity detection to pause a walk if you stand up and start walking or are in a vehicle. This happens entirely on your device, in real time, and only during a walk or the practice. Head movement is not recorded, stored or shared. In sleep mode, the turn you make at the start of a walk is used to measure your head on the pillow and is kept in memory for that walk only.

Answering by voice (microphone and speech recognition)

If you allow it, when a walk ends the app listens through the microphone on your iPhone or iPad for about ten seconds, so you can say “walk on” or “home” with your eyes closed. The words are recognised by Apple’s speech recognition on your device — the app requires on-device recognition and switches the feature off where it isn’t available — and only to choose between those two answers. No audio is recorded, stored or sent anywhere, and nothing you say leaves your device. You can turn it off at any time in Settings → Answer by voice, or withdraw the permission in the Settings app.

Camera, location, contacts, photos

Shade & Snow does not use the camera, your location, your contacts or your photos.

Voices and sounds

All voices and sounds are recordings included in the app. Nothing is generated online while you play, and nothing you do is sent anywhere to produce them.

Third parties

Shade & Snow includes no third-party advertising, analytics or tracking code, and shares no data with anyone.

Children’s privacy

Because Shade & Snow collects no data, it does not knowingly collect information from anyone, including children under 13.
