Liminal is designed so that what you think about stays yours. We collect only what we need to run the app, we never sell your data, we don’t track you across other apps or websites — and the personal things you make inside Liminal live on your devices and in your own iCloud, where we cannot read them. This page explains exactly what goes where, and how to delete it.

What Liminal is

Liminal is a work of imagination — a game in which historical thinkers are reconstructed from their writings to think alongside you. They are not real people, and what they say are simulations, not genuine counsel. Liminal is for reflection only; it is not philosophical, psychological, medical, legal, or financial advice.

What stays with you (we never see it)

The personal layer of Liminal is stored on your device and — if you’re signed into iCloud — synced through your own iCloud account (Apple’s private database and key-value store). It never touches our servers, and we have no way to read it:

• Kept lines and your reflections — the words you save and anything you write about them.
• Collections, favourites, and starred ideas.
• Your daily practice — the Threshold streak.
• The chambers’ memory of your visits — used only to greet you when you return. You can turn this off in the You tab (Chambers remember you), which also erases the record.

The “Your Reflection” screen is computed on your device from this same data — it is a window for you, not a report to us.

Information we collect (only if you sign in)

• Account information. When you sign in with Apple, we receive your name (if you choose to share it), your email address, and Apple’s account identifier. If you choose Hide My Email, we only ever receive Apple’s private relay address. On the web version, you may instead sign in with Google, in which case we receive the equivalent from Google.
• Usage counters tied to your account — how many free answers you’ve used and any credits you’ve purchased, so they follow you across devices.
• Content you submit for live answers. When you request a live AI answer, the words you type for that turn are sent to our server. So the voice can answer as if it knows what has moved you, a handful of your most recent kept lines may accompany the request as context — never your private reflections, and nothing else about you. The app shows you exactly what travels, under “What the voices carry” in Your Reflection.
• A session token stored as a cookie, to keep you signed in.

You can use much of Liminal as a guest, without signing in.

How your content is used (AI)

Live, in-character answers are generated by Anthropic’s Claude API. When you use a live AI feature, the words submitted for that turn (your question, plus the kept-lines context described above) are sent to Anthropic to generate the response, and the answer is returned to you. We do not keep the content of your questions or the voices’ answers on our server — we log only operational metadata (timings, model, token counts) to run the service. Offline answers are produced from bundled templates on your device or our server and are not sent to any AI provider. Please don’t enter sensitive personal information. Purchases

On iPhone, iPad, and Mac, credits are sold through Apple’s In-App Purchase — Apple processes the payment and we never see your card details; we receive a verified record that a purchase occurred so we can add credits to your account. On the web, payments are processed by Stripe under the same principle: Stripe handles the card, we receive confirmation and add the credits.

Notifications

If you turn on the morning reminder for the daily question, the notification is scheduled on your device by iOS. We run no push servers and cannot send you anything. Turning the bell off cancels them.

Tracking & analytics

Liminal does not track you across other companies’ apps or websites, shows no advertising, and includes no third-party advertising or analytics SDKs. We do not sell or share your personal data.

Data retention & deleting your data

Your iCloud data (keepsakes, reflections, collections, streaks, visit memory) is yours: delete items in the app, flip Chambers remember you off to erase the visit record, or remove the app’s iCloud data from your device’s iCloud settings. Your account can be deleted at any time from the Account screen in the app, or by emailing us (below). Deleting your account erases your name, email, and purchase records and ends your session. We retain a single minimal, anonymized flag — that the account had used its free allowance — solely so the free trial cannot be reset by deleting and signing up again; any credits you purchased are kept for you. This cannot be undone.

Children’s privacy

Liminal is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will delete it.

Liminal is not a crisis or counseling service. If you are struggling, please reach out to someone you trust, a trained professional, or your local crisis line or emergency services.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, we’ll update this page and revise the date above.
